Most style advice for women over 60 was written for somebody else

You have seen it. The "what to wear after 60" list shown on a light-skinned model in a pale gray cardigan. The foundation that looked fine in the store and turned ashy by lunch. The "age-appropriate" rules written by people half your age, who never held a fabric up to a face like yours.

None of it was about you: your undertone, your silver or dark hair, your church Sundays, your budget, your knees. Most advice skips all of that, and then wonders why it does not work.

This book starts from you. One chapter per topic, written for brown skin from light to deep, for silver, dark and covered hair, and for the life you actually live. Every rule comes with the reason it works, so you can test it in your own mirror.

A note from Loretta

I wrote down everything I told my clients

I spent twenty-two years in New York as a beauty and style editor at a magazine. Then I ran my own image-consulting studio here in Atlanta for twenty years, styling hair, glasses and wardrobe for news anchors and executives.

When I retired and started making videos, your comments told me what was missing. You did not want to look like somebody else, and you did not want to chase "young". You wanted to look rested, polished and like yourself. So I put it all in one book, chapter by chapter, with the reasons, a budget way and a comfortable way. No brands, no sponsors, no tricks. That is all this is, honey: the fitting room, you and me.

Stand tall, wear the good earrings.

Loretta

  4. The four-second shop testQuick checks you can run in a store, a fitting room or your own closet.
  5. What I put on clientsMy own taste, clearly marked as taste. You may disagree.

Look inside

Here is how a page reads

This page comes from the Glasses chapter. Every chapter reads the same way: plain words, the reason behind each rule, and a quick test you can run in a store or in front of your own mirror.

The book itself is set in 14 point type on 7 x 10 inch pages, so it is comfortable to read on a tablet, a computer or on paper.

Chapter 1 · Glasses

The Four-Second Shop Test

Before you fall for a color, put the frame on, face the mirror and check four things. It takes less time than reading the tag.

  1. Bridge. The frame should rest on your nose without sliding or pinching. If your bridge is low or soft, ask for adjustable nose pads or a "low bridge fit".
  2. Brow. The top edge should follow your brow line, not cut across the middle of your eyebrows. Your brows carry your expression, so keep them in view.
  3. Hinge. The hinges should line up with the sides of your face, with no gap and no squeeze at the temples. I have had my own hinges repaired twice, so check them.
  4. Width. Your eyes should sit near the center of each lens. Too wide and your face looks narrow; too narrow and it looks crowded.

A frame that passes all four is a frame you will actually wear.

How I wrote it

Four rules I kept on every page

  • 1The page says what it means

Plain words, large print. When something reliably works, I call it a rule. When it is only my taste, I say so.

  • 2Every rule comes with its reason

Light, line, contrast, proportion or comfort. When you know why it works, you can test it in your own mirror.

  • 3Every chapter has a budget way

Your own closet, a thrift store or a good tailor. Nothing in this book needs an expensive product, and every chapter has a comfortable way too.

  • 4No brand ads, no sponsors

The book names no brands and takes no sponsor money. Nobody paid to be in it.

What this book will not do

  • Promise you will look decades younger. It helps you choose what suits the face you have now.

  • Tell you to change your natural hair or hide your age. Silver, natural, relaxed, locs, wigs: all of it is respected.

  • Give medical advice. Loretta is a stylist. Health and skin questions belong with your doctor or dermatologist.

  • Push brands or take sponsor money. No brand is named, and no one paid to be in it.

  • Use before-and-after tricks. No dramatic reveals, just clear reasons you can test yourself.
